Help getting 386 IBM compatible hard drive running
« on: December 10, 2004, 11:50:52 AM »
My 386 computer with dos 5.0 wasn't working well.  I though formatting the hard drive would help.  now I can't get it working again.  I loaded the bios for my hard drive and tried my systems disk but I was getting no ware.  I made a bootable disk from a 486 computer with dos 6.2 and tried again and got the following messages "bad or missing command interpreter" and "incorrect dos version".  Can someone help me?

Are you attempting to format as DOS 5.0 or DOS 6.2?

Then why are you using a DOS 6.2 boot disk?

Only if it runs Windows.
Download boot disk from here (click).

are you trying to load win3.1 place the boot boot in the f/d..and use the a:\sys c:            command....now load the win3.1 .....type setup after the prompt....thats going back some but still useful and the game solitare...where all the cards cascaded>...all you needed to do was to use the  del*-* or made a bootdisk disk beforehand ........any typo mistakes can be put down to .....<pigs ear>but an example anyway......

If you miss 3.1, go to start > run > progman
Don't know if it works on the newer Windows though...

Boot from your DOS 5 floppy and at the prompt type sys c: This will transfer the system files to the HD and you can remove the floppy and reboot.
