    Outlook express and news groups
    « on: October 24, 2007, 02:12:38 AM »
]In the news groups I attempt to block messages from certain users, set in RULES etc., but no matter what I do, the unwanted messages keep coming in.

Anyone know what I'm overlooking? I'm using OE6.

Unusual question; I've rarely seen questions about using OE for newsgroups.  I've used OE for newsgroups, but never tried using Rules to filter newsgroup messages.  I use Rules a lot for mail, but not newsgroups.  When I used OE for newsgroup messages, I never saw a need to use Rules for them.  I think I'd simply unsubscribe to a newsgroup if I did not want to receive messages from it.

Exactly how are you creating your Rules?  What Conditions did you specify? What Actions did you select?

There is a BLOCK SENDER choice that never works. When I mentioned that to someone in a newsgroup they suggested I set in rules instead.

The rules selection has two windows - the first is where you select something, like people in the FROM line, (This brings up the message author's email address), and the second window asks what you want to do with it. I always select DELETE IT.

It appears each time I get messages from that user they should be deleted, but that doesn't happen.

Microsoft's OE help doesn't address this for some reason.

On an older version of OE, when I took a block sender action, it blocked them. And it also asked me if I wanted to delete all that person's messages. Neither of these happen any more.

I want to be able to do this because the particular newsgroup (alt.astronomy) is full of trolls spouting garbish.

Have you considered switching back to a newsgroup reader ? ?

I've never used anything but OE, however, as your the second person to suggest a newsgroup reader from elsewhere, I've decided to go that route.

And Tucows! Haven't been there in years!

Thanks to all for the information.

Thanks to all, and Patio in particular. Downloaded the NOWORYTA news reader from TUCOWS and installed it. I've only used it for a few minutes, so far, but it appears to do exactly what I what.

It is nice to have a working kill file!
