Format, Reinstall C: Drive, Affect F: Drive?
« on: November 11, 2007, 08:27:34 PM »
Hi, I have an 80 GB harddrive with Windows XP Home on it labeled C: and another 500 GB hardrive labeled F:.  Some time ago I moved My Documents from C: to F: and in My Music I have about 60 GB of music.
My C: drive is getting kind of bloated and I was thinking about formatting it and reinstalling XP.  I'm wondering what should I do with the F: drive?  Will the reinstall take My Documents off F:?  Should I back up all that music (and other important data in My documents) and format F: too?  Will formatting C: have no effect on F:?

Trying to avoid spending a lot of time putting all that data onto DVD's, thought maybe I could get away with leaving the F: alone and just wipe the C: and reinstall.  Whatta ya think?

Windows XP Home 2.8 GHz Pentium 4, 2 GB ram

Formatting C: should not affect F: at all...
You will however have to re-direct your Doc and Settings folder back to F: for it to work properly.
Make sure to assemble all your drivers prior to the format.

Thank you very much Patio.  So, the new install will have a new My Documents on C:.  How do I go about redirecting?  I'm thinking right clicking on the C: My Documents/Properties and changing the target or something along these lines correct?  Mark

Right click on My Documents, select Properties, and click on the Move button.

Yes I know how to move My Documents but if there is already a My Documents on the F: drive from the previous install, what then?  That's my quandary.  Mark

Looks to me like the Find Target button, rather than Move, is the answer.  It appears to  be a way of telling Windows your My Documents folder is in a different location, without moving files and folders.

All right, thanks all.  I'll give it a go.
