parallel printer port - usb booboo... aargh!
    « on: November 17, 2007, 05:40:30 AM »
Hi; I've just reconnected my kyocera fs3800 laser printer with a usb to parallel cable, forgetting that it was still  turned on. I know that this is a VERY BAD thing to do (to paraphrase the manual); there's no communication between my xp PC which says "printer ready" and "failed to print", and the printer which will happily print a self-test page, and says "printer ready" on its display. I've tried printing from various programmes with the same result; therefore I've either fried the cable or, more likely, something inside the printer. Do printers have anything like a fuse protecting the ports?

I expect the most economic thing is to buy another printer, which is fairly cheap,(reconditioned)  but I don't like chucking things if they can be easily fixed.  I might have known this was going to happen as I'd just bought two new toner kits for it, each costing more than the reconditioned printer !

    thanks.

I would actually try another printer on your computer hooked up in the same fashion to see if the MBoard is damaged...keep your fingers crossed that it's only the printer.

Sometimes doing things a little bit bassackwards works. Shut down the computer. Disconnect the printer cable. Disconnect the printer power. Reboot the computer and shut down again. Reconnect the cables in reverse order (power first). Reboot the computer, then turn on printer power. In control panel/printers there are a couple of other options you might be interested in trying. You can redirect printing to a different port or to a file or you can capture the printer port and send it elswhere. If any of the methods work, it is less expensive to do a few mouse clicks than to buy a new printer.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

thanks Patio; I've tried another printer in the usb port  and that (& other usb devices)works fine, so I guess I'm all right at the computer end; I'll try 2K's suggestion later.

Absolutely!  In future my cabinetmaking mode will not be switched off when I leave the workshop ("measure twice, cut once".... though come to think of it, do I still actually do that?  Hmmm).
