    Multi Boot ISO
    « on: November 19, 2007, 11:31:30 PM »
Hey guys, I am looking for a way to create a multi booting CD with a few different Live Linux-based distros, and one windows based CD on there. I've tried a few automated programs (MagicISO and EZboot), and have had success with neither so far. Are there are other good programs to try, or does anyone know a manual way to go about it? Thanks

Sounds like you need a boot loader.

But,  I realized that I've done part of what you asked.     "a" way ....   :)
For the Linux part anyway.   Not sure just what you mean by the Windows based CD.   You might want to elaborate on that part some more.

What I was doing, was playing around with the Ultimate Boot CD.
Before I forget to say it,   not only is it free,  it is a very nice tool to have.

On their site,  besides being able to d/l UBCD,  they have lots of info, tutorials, FAQs, forums, etc.
For example, on the Tutorials page,  one link is titled, "How to integrate *censored* Small Linux (DSL) to UBCD".
Sounds just like what you want!   :)

In the forums,  there is a section titled,  "Tutorials & How-Tos".
In it there is a sticky,  "HOWTO: Integrate Puppy Linux with UBCD V4"
and another,  "Customizing UBCD - Adding linux distros to your UBCD - more"
along with lots of other interesting stickies, posts, etc.

    Main page:    http://www.ultimatebootcd.com
    Spend some time looking around.
Especially, see the link for    Customizing UBCD

Note:   In the stuff you'll be reading with UBCD,  you'll eventually come across  ubcd2iso.bat .        It is used to create the ISO file, after you are done  customizing it.
It has been a while since I did it.    I remember that I had trouble with it.
    It runs   mkisofs.exe  .
Discovered that one of the problems was that the command line was too long!      ( Using Win98 here )
I think the command line in that batch file is ok for WinXP.  Don't know for sure though.
Just giving you a heads up,  ahead of time.   :)

    I worked around it though.
After I did my customizing,   I rebooted to a linux live cd.  Puppy Linux.
Ran     mkisofs    (linux version)   and it didn't balk at the long command line.
Created a nice, big ol'   ISO file that I could then burn to CD.
That part worked like a charm.

There are probably other ways to create a customizable, multi-boot CD.
Hopefully somebody else will post with info on boot loaders for you.
In the meantime,  I hope what I've said helps.    If nothing else,  you'll have a copy of UBCD,  which is nice to have anyway!     :)

Thanks Will, I will have a look at that page in more depth and let you know what comes about from it. Thanks for taking the time to reply :)  UBCD sounds very much like Hirens boot disk.

I haven't played around with Hiren's.   I remember reading some about it.
In that they are both utility/boot  CDs,   yes - they have that in common.

Somebody will jump in here if I'm wrong,  but I think that Hiren's included some copyright protected software once upon a time.     UBCD seems to try to avoid that.

If you decide to download an ISO, open it, customize it, re-create it, and burn it -   Please do post back and let us know how it is working for you.

Thanks for your link patio. I shall look at it soon, I'm in the middle of a fair bit of Pentesting related work and study at the moment, so a little pre-occupied :)  I'll look soon, thanks
