I don't know what happened but suddenly, whenever I go to a folder containing pictures, instead of seeing a small thumbnail, I see what application it opens in. Is there any way to fix this?

Did you go to View and check thumbnails?
Windows 8 and Windows 10 dual boot with two SSD's

what seems to have happen is that you may have installed new software that recognises this type of file and to get you to use this programme it has set itself up as the default program.

to change this right click on one of the files select "open with....." then "choose "program" and select windows picture/fax viewer and this should change the icons back if you also tick the box always do this for this type of file this will stop that other programme from changing them back

Nope. Still not working. Now it shows pictures of flowers. Maybe it helps if I add I use Vista? I don't know if that makes a difference...

Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View, do you have "Always show icons, never thumbnails" checked?
