Windows Explorer problems (with more details of what happened)
« on: January 18, 2008, 11:42:54 PM »
WARNING: Long post ahead. Please make sure you have the time to read this.  ;)

Hi all!

First, I apologize for posting the same problem twice. I didn't want to go looking through all pages to find where my other topic is.

Second, I can't use System Restore.

Third, I've done a bit of tweaking lately so I might have to get a new computer anyway, since it might stuff up my system.

And 4th, uninstalling IZArc did not help me with anything.

When I open a folder in Windows Exploder, I get an error exactly like this message:

The computer still works, but I can't open any folders, including My Docs, My Pics, and My Computer. I can't even backup documents to a USB due to this problem. SFC /SCANNOW didn't find any missing files. HOWEVER, today when I opened EXPLORER.EXE in Dependency Walker, it said that DWMAPI.DLL was missing. I deleted it because COMODO Firewall Pro kept crashing due to this file. SHLWAPI.DLL has a red icon next to it, so does MPR.DLL.

Dependency Walker also says this:

Warning: At least one delay-load dependency module was not found.
Warning: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in a delay-load dependent module.

AND BEHOLD!! DWMAPI.DLL IS ASSOCIATED WITH INTERNET EXPLOITER!! F##k that *censored*, IE crashes my system every time I need and use it. Internet Explorer sucks.

There's more...

Looking in the WINDOWS folder, there are two files called EXPLORER.EXE and EXPLORER_ORIGINAL.EXE. Oh god, don't tell me this is a virus...

What else have I done recently? Well...

I tried to unzip the Gweled game for GNOME. It was compressed in GZ format. That was before I found out that GNOME was for Linux, and most Linux users compress files in GZ format. That's when it all started. The file didn't have any viruses inside it, and it was only source code. No applications.

I installed the Royale Remixed theme and replaced the "turn off computer" dialog box so that it matches the theme.

But that's all I can remember doing.

I use Windows XP Home Edition with SP2.

Thank you.

Go to start/run and type in services.msc and hit Enter...
Post a screenshot of it here.

Is this the machine that Broni helped you clean out in the Virus section awhile back ? ?

There can be a number of issues that cause Explorer problems.
We may need to remove some things to get this sorted.
Where is "dependency sorter" from and how long have you been using it ? ?
It very may well be the culprit.

Refresh us on the protection apps currently installed on that machine also.

I can't post a screenshot because Paint.NET is damaged and MS Paint doesn't allow me to reduce the size, nor does the GIMP.

This the Compaq Presario M2000 running Windows XP Home Edition SP2.
Today when I started my computer, I got a blue screen saying "Please wait". When my computer loaded, the Windows XP theme changed to the Windows classic theme. I guess SFC /SCANNOW automatically replaced the patched UXTHEME.DLL. (but it is MUCH faster) I am able to open the Recycle Bin, which is a good sign, but I think there's more then that. Pressing the HOME key in GIMP makes the machine produce a beep. I don't know what is going on. When I press CTRL + ALT + DEL the fan on my laptop stops spinning. Should I dump my computer and get a new one with Vista? Get help from a malware removal specialist?

Protection apps:

Firewall = COMODO Firewall Pro 3.0
Antivirus = AVG Free Edition 7.5
Antispyware = Spybot Search and Destroy
Browser = Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.11

Don't know if this is useful, but a folder just opened with the search screen, most of the buttons on the Windows Explorer toolbar are missing. Also, I'm getting these Windows Explorer messages at random times. (even when no folder is open)

Click Start, click Run, type eventvwr.msc in the Open box, and then press Enter.
    Click the Application category.

Look For Recent Errors > Double Click on them > Another Windows Will open > On the Right Side use the Double Notepad icon to copy the error paste them here

Here's the contents of the Event:

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.3156, faulting module normaliz.dll, version 6.0.5441.0, fault address 0x0000100a.

I don't have a clue in *censored* what "normaliz.dll" is. Virus?

I'll take a look at the link you posted.

In your post at Tech Support Guy you said:

    Quote
It Might be a third party module 'Hooking' on to explorer causing it to crash.

Lets Check The dll's that are getting loaded under explorer.exe

Download the Attached File "Find.rar" > Unzip it > Double Click on "Process.bat" > It Will Produce a Log For You "Process.txt" ... Attach the Log Here

Note:- Don't Copy and Paste .. Just Attach it

It's late here, so I'll post a log tomorrow.

      Download normaliz.dll
      http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?normaliz

      And Copy It To "%SystemRoot%\System32"

      Start > Run > sfc /scannow

Do you have any files on the machine you really need? At this point your spending more time than its worth. I would foramt the drive and do a full reload of the machine.

OK, I'm doing that now, but some of the third party DLL's are used by AVG. Can I rename these? I don't want to have to download and reinstall AVG again.

It crashes randomly and when I'm doing something specific.

Renaming the third party DLLs. I will leave AVG alone.
