at this time im running xp sp2 with all updates, im planning on upgrading my current config with a new mb/cpu or building a new comp, if i change out to media center will i still be able to use the same programs i have now or will i need to upgrade them as well.  (windvd, roxio, games)

No, the media center editions supports the same software as XP pro.
