Accidentally Erased HD!!!
« on: March 16, 2008, 12:34:04 PM »
I just ran a program called eraser to erase all "unused" disk space on my hard drive, now everything is gone including my I-Tunes Library!!! Please if someone knows a way to reverse this let me know.  There are no system restore points on my cpu either.   :o

Welcome to Computer Hope.

I'm not familiar with "eraser" to know just what it really did.     But,  you could visit:
http://www.recuva.com
and read the description to see if you think it is worth a shot.

It is free.

    This software correct?
    http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/

The very point of Eraser is to make deleted data unrecoverable, so if Eraser really did wipe the data the chance of recovery is about 0. (Unless you happen to have access to a team of data recovery specialists and their lab.)
You can try Recuva. It should be able to recover the data if it by some smaller miracle wasn't actually wiped by Eraser.

I'm sorry you had to learn this the hard way but you should always be extremely careful with disk wiping software. Backup, backup, backup.

I have used eraser many times over the past few years and this has never happened. It only overwrites the files that have already been deleted. When I use it to erase the free space it really does it! I tried using "Pandora's Box" file recovery afterwards and those files don't come up. It seems that if the files are overwritten once, the free file recovery programs can't recover them.

You sound like you want your music back. If it is still on your ipod download a program called iDump. this will get all of your music from your ipod onto your PC again.

*** Make sure you do not have iTunes installed on your computer when you plug it in. Some versions will wipe your ipod if your itunes is empty.***
