One year ago replaced master with a new Maxtor. Worked fine for one year and a day. Have been using former drive (original) as a back up. Has not been formatted! The Maxtor is defective and doesn't even show on set up. Tried to change the slave back to master and it starts to boot windows xp, goes through the welcome screed and stops on the Windows XP logo and does nothing. However the drive shows and files and data when used as a slave in another computer. It however shows as drive H. Should I change the drive designation and if so how. Thanks, Roy

Sounds to me like XP is'nt properly installed on the original drive?
I would check bios to see if the settings for the drive are correct.
If all is OK, you might have to re-install XP.
Otherwise buy another H/D and install this as a master. H/D's now are
    unbelievably cheap.

Copying or backing up files to the slave will not make it bootable...
If XP was never installed on the slave this won't work.
Post alot more details on both drives and how they are setup.
