    External hard drive crashes computer
    « on: April 08, 2008, 12:45:55 PM »
    Hi

I have a 300Gb Samsung external hard drive

I have some programs installed to it, and i kind of wont it to work without losing data

When ever i plug the hard drive into 'any' computer, it slows the computer down, and the computer says its installing it, but it takes to long

i got a computer to get to a point were it could scan it (anti-virus scan), but the scan (zone alarm) crashed when trying to scan it for spyware. The scan found no viruses.

theres no way of getting the into the hard drive, when a computer manges to install it, i try and open it (it's folder (E:/)) but the computer crashes.

I've had the hard drive for at least 2 weeks, and only now I've had problems with it.

    can anyone help

(PS, i've only tried it on Xp Home edition computers)

What exactly have you installed on it?

Do you mean as soon as you plug it in or when you try to run or install a program FROM the Hard Drive?

Do you mean when you try to run the program on the HD or when you try to go into it via My Computer?

      OK
Sorry, I mean when I plug my external hard drive in (VIA USB) the computer slows down. some things don't open, like folders and firefox ect

When I plug the hard drive into a computer, the computer installs it ("found new device... installing... local disk E)

But it takes ages to install it.

If I wait long enough, and have My Computer open, the computer sees that it's installed, and shows up as '(E:/)'
But when i click on  the folder named '(E:/)' the computer goes really slow, and after a while pops up with a message saying some like this "unable to load E:/"

My computer and some other computers I've tried it on, all slow down while the HD is on, but as soon as it's of, everything is ok again.

I just had Microsoft Office Enterprise installed on it

But i don't mind losing data anymore, if it fixes the  External HD

You shouldn't install programs on portable devices. They won't work.
You can get portable programs specifically designed for portable devices (www.portableapps.com)

If you don't mind about losing the data, I would reformat the drive but I'm not sure that is the only option.

When you plug the HD in, right click on it (E:\), go to Properties, the Tools tab and click Check Now.

          OK,
I have  a Intel core 2 duo e6600 installed and I'm currently running a NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT graphics card. 1gb of ram and I have a BIO Star (PT890 775 SE) motherboard

it's only stopped working about 3 days ago

I've tried it on 1 other computer and that one 2 slows down when I plug the HD in

either computers can open it's folder, or right click its folder

it's a 300Gb Samsung external hard drive, it has a little fan under either it's case and I plug it in VIA USB

It also needs to be plug into a power supply

Yeb, I haven't changed anything since I purchased it

I've recently tried it on a Vista and a Xp Professional

And neither can open it's folder

they both install it and say its working.

on the device manger it say claims nothings wrong

On the Vista, it doesn't show up in 'computer' but it says its installed

same with the Professional ( but 'My computer')

How is the drive being reported in Disk Management ? ?

I'd still run the diagnostics for a little peace of mind...
