Author Topic: Is AVG Free 8.0 faster than 7.5? (Read 22273 times)

I just installed AVG Free 8.0 today, over version 7.5. I've noticed that Word and Excel launch faster now. Perhaps it's affected other apps as well, but the launch speed of Word 2003 and Excel 2003 are where I particularly noticed a difference. Anybody else noticed significant differences in your system's performance due to this upgrade?

I am glad you posted this question soybean...I recently uninstalled avg due to the fact that it slowed things down to much and installed avast....but after reading what you say I may consider going back to avg as I have always liked it.

I have been seeing other problems as well. Seems there are some bugs to work out still.

I'm running Win XP Pro SP2. I had not planned to upgrade because I seemed to recall reading about some users having problems with 8.0. But, when I received a notice today from AVG that 7.5 will no longer be supported after May 31, 2008, I decided to go ahead with the upgrade.

I did not remove 7.5 before installing 8.0; this decision was made after reading on grisoft.com that installing 8.0 will remove any previous versions of AVG. Whatever it was, it did not prevent a continuation of installation; as I recall, I had to click OK on some prompt related to the message and then the installation proceeded to completion. Once the installation finished, I was prompted to restart my computer. I also still had to get updates for AVG; it's main panel warned me that I needed to get updates; this appears to be a one-time catch-up. I have confirmed that AVG is monitoring my email. I use both Outlook and Outlook Express and it is inserting the notice at the bottom of incoming messages that no virus was found in the message.

I read the other thread you posted and I can say, in spite of the large download file, version 8.0 is not behaving like bloatware. In fact, I noticed improved performance over 7.5. Applications (not just Word and Excel) are launching faster. By the way, Add or Remove Programs panel shows AVG Free 8.0 weighing in at 26.69MB.

If I encounter any problems in the next few days, I post back with details.

Edit: After the installation, an old folder named Grisoft and two sub-folders remained in my Program Files folder, but they were empty. I deleted the folders. I then ran CCleaner's registry scan. It found 10 items, some of those were AVG; no surprise there; that's what registry cleaners are for, right?

HERE is the thread I started at the AVG forums with the reply I was given. I don't see where that solution would help. I know how to install software and have never had a problem on this particular PC. I even installed and used the 8.0 Pro version when it was in early beta stages with no problems what so ever.

I'm really not 'trying' to bash AVG, I just made a decision to boycott and haven't changed my mind yet. I'm sure the number of users who have had no problems far out weigh the ones who have. I might go back to it one day. Just not today

I believe, I know how to install a program, as well, but after trying different combinations for couple of hours, I wasn't able to install AVG 8 on Vista, nor on virtual XP.

I just install v8 on 2 machines (XP SP2) I was working on today without a hitch. Smooth install. I did so after noticing (like soybean) that 7.5 was going away.

Thanks everyone for the info for version 8, as I have 7.5.524, and had no idea of a upgrade or later version. But when I update from the program, it does the usual incremental updates - but no upgrade or reference. Surely AVG would actively inform, somehow of this new version? If not - why not? Seems an upgrade may not add more in terms of virus detection...

The upgrade is listed as itself in the virus definition update window when you run it...
Personally i'm holding off as long as i can.

Download and installed no problem. It did a brief check and found and notified me of AVG 7.5's presence and said it would be uninstalled automatically before AVG 8 was put on. Went without a hitch.

One thing, I don't like is "Link Scanner", which installs without asking for permission.
I use McAfee Site Advisor, which gives you much more info, then AVG's Link Scanner.
If you disable it in AVG, it displays stupid "!" mark on AVG systray icon.
Fortunately, it may be disabled from within browser.
It's incompatible with FF3, which I have on XP, so it doesn't kick in, but it's still listed in Add-ons, as incompatible.
I'm pretty sure, it can be removed through profile listing. I'll work on it.

I'm using AVG 8, seems to be nice and fast.
Not a fan of the new interface myself though, but in all fairness it's not something I look at that often.
It's possible to opt out of installing LinkScanner (which I did) - check here.
Anyway, no problems with the new version on my end.

Good to know. I just saw the description of it and decided I didn't want it as I already use SiteAdvisor and NoScript. Also, Broni's statement would further influence me against using it in addition to SiteAdvisor.

Well, be glad you didn't... I've had my browser (FF2) crash 4 times while searching on Google since I've installed AVG 8. Think the link scanner has something to do with it because it crashes while it's scanning all the links.

I used to think like that, but tried SitAdvisor out a few days ago.
Wouldn't go without it now, it doesn't seem to make a big difference to the speed or reliability of Firefox.

Normally, I don't use them. This is the first time I have. I have a regular list of websites I go to and don't usually visit anything new or unusual. If the problem persists, I'll disable it.

Anyway...I've avoided 8.0 so far. I downloaded it, but I'm not updating until support for 7.5 runs out at the end of the month. I'm sure I'll be unhappy with the new version because I'm stubborn like that, but as long as it still provides the same (or better) protection, then all is well.

What other protection programs do you have installed ? ?
You should be disconnected from the web and have them turned off for the install process...

You may also have a corrupted DLoad...try grabbing a fresh copy then follow the procedure above.
