Computer freezes every minute during 5 seconds

My laptop computer freezes exactly every minute during approximately 5 seconds (screen, mouse, etc). This happens all the time and it is independant of the running applications....

I noticed it with Skype because I loose communication during the 5 second period every minute however it happens with any other application aswell.

I tried running an AV but nothing is found....

Is anybody familiar with this issue?

You say computer freezes every minute during 5 seconds.  Is that freezes for 5 seconds every minute?  Does it automatically unfreeze or do you have to reboot?  What version of Windows are you running? Did this just start and have you installed new program?

so in one minute, you get 55 seconds of usability and 5 seconds of frozen computer. And this happens every minute the computer is on?

NO, I don't reboot; after the 5 second pause, everything goes back to normal by itself, then, 55 seconds later, another 5 second pause... continues periodically...

The Windows version is XP Home Edition...and the temp is fine; fan seems to work correctly (starts and stops from time to time in a normal basis..)

Is was thinking it might be a sort of infection (which the AV didn't detect)

1.  What is Make and Model Number of laptop?

2.  How much system memory does the laptop have?

3.  Boot to Safe Mode to see if problem exists in that environment.  Safe Mode is a "minimal" boot so you're running with basic drivers, limited hardware, and no startup programs.

At system startup, tap the F8 key about once per second or faster.  Windows Advanced Options Menu should appear.  Use "up" and "down" arrows to select a boot option.  Start with "Safe Mode" and then perhaps "Safe Mode with Networking".

If problem doesn't exist in Safe Mode, it's probably a software issue.  You would then want to control which "software" automatically starts at boot and login in an attempt to identify the culprit (for the symptoms).  But we're getting ahead of ourselves.
