(the next post is a list of my computer's specs)

my graphics card is displaying 8 times on the hardware manager screen

i have recently been getting errors regarding my grapics card getting stuck in an endless loop

also when i start the computer it sometimes doesn't recognise the hard drive and gives an error message asking for a system disk to be inserted (like when you leave a CD in the drive but there is none) after a reboot or two it usually works fine

i have updated all my drivers, cleaned my card etc etc, nothing works, any suggestions to fix the above problems would be greatly appreciated (i'm guessing these are hardware issues)

edit: i've found some discussions of the loop issue, apparently its just an issue, time to get trying solutions, any suggestions on the other two issues?

edit2: why would it suddenly start this loop error when i'm certain i've changed nothing on it for a few weeks if not more?

for whatever reason, your video  card did not show up on your systems info list. you stated that you updated all the drivers, did you remember to uninstall the old video card drivers before installing the new ones, and are these the official drivers or are they third party ones?

if you uninstalled your drivers before reinstalling them and if you used official drivers and your still having problems, i would test the video card in another machine. make one 100% that it is not faulty.

This is from your page file:

            DxDiag Notes
            ------------
DirectX Files Tab: No problems found.
Display Tab 1: The system is using the generic video driver.  Please install video driver provided by the hardware manufacturer. Direct3D functionality not available.  You should verify that the driver is a final version from the hardware manufacturer.
Sound Tab 1: No problems found.
Music Tab: No DirectMusic ports were found.
                      Input Tab: No problems found.
                    Network Tab: No problems found.

Download the up to date ATI drivers only without CCC. Burn them to CD or save them to desktop where can easily find them. Uninstall your current drivers. Re-boot. Install the up to date drivers.

First. When you boot. Is your video card name, model and memory size shown on the upper left hand side of your monitor? Second, Is the apiture size for your video card correctly set in BIOS?

When you say: " it won't boot" do you mean Windows does not start? Exactly which error messages, if any, are being displayed?

well, its started showing an error during install of just the drivers

                  message window title is "Severe"

error reads "Zero Siplay Service Error"

the boot error comes just after the windows loading bar bit, when the screen usually changes to my desktop resolution, the error talks about ending the current operation because the graphics card got stuck in an endless loop

it references ati2dvag as the source

it then dumps its memory and stops, you have to reboot to get it to do anything

currently its just flashing a blue screen up then rebooting automatically, i think its the same error

i dont think the card details display during boot, but they never have, also whats apature size?

[are the 8 copies of x800gto that appear in device manager a sign of something else?]

You'll need to be exact in describing the error descriptions. For example: does the error just say "stop" or is there an exact error description?

Press F8, TAB or delete key to post to BIOS. Apiture size, is the size of the memory for your video card: ie 64, 128, 256, 512, ect. You will need to set the exact memory size for video card in BIOS.

the error with the drivers was just that little box with an ok button.

the blue screen error about the loop only flashes up for a second, how can i make it display for longer so i can copy it down?

also i dont have the option to set my gfx card memory on my bios

edit: i videoed the blue screen, it is a "stop" error now, i'm going to do a system restore again and see if i can get it working

the one that flashed up i think was a bad driver install or something, i did a few system restores and it went away,

anyway, this is a pic of the error message i got when i turned it on after the restore

                        http://homepages.which.net/%7Ea.leng/P1011030.JPG

and then i went for lunch, came back rebooted and it works, CoD4 is running fine atm, any idea whats causing this intermittent problem?

Had a look at screen shot. That was a Windows "stop" error which presumeable was caused by the video card driver. Now that you have it working albeit with intermittentently, set a system restore point. _At least you'll have a "last good save".
