Freezing Up Randomly

First, I'm SO glad you all are here. Thanks in advance.

Every 10 minutes or so my mouse and keyboard lock up. The whole systems freezes for about 2 minutes, then comes back to life. It makes absolutely no difference what program I'm working with - everything is fair game. I've run adware scans, registry fixers, spy doctors, cleaned and defragged. I've run out of ideas.
I'm on a Gateway 256, Win98. Any and all assistance is welcomed.

You never mentioned that you have Antivirus software... You DO, right? Also, did this JUST happen like a day ago? If so, then have you installed any new hardware/software during that time?

Sorry for the imcomplete info, Flame. I have not installed any new hardware recently, and have several virusscan programs /adware/etc installed. I've run them all. This freeze up problem has been going on for about 3 weeks, and seems to be getting worse.
Ideas? Hope???
Thanks -
Georgia

Georgia, how many programs start when you turn on your computer? Also, how much RAM do you have?
