    Ethernet cable help
    « on: June 07, 2008, 12:14:47 PM »
All Ethernet cables are diferant in that they all have and use diferaant number of wires in the Cable. I have DSL so it cam with a standared Ethernet cable but it is very short.

If I go buy a longer Ethernet cable how do I know it will work with the MODEM they gave me?

What kind of Ethernet cable does DSL USE I have DSL from Verizon.
    Thanks

usually cat 5 or cat 6 will work with anything but don't buy a crossover cable that's only for connecting a pc to pc directly without a switch or router. Just make sure that it's a straight through cable and any length or cat5 or cat6 of that cable will work with no problem and will work with any modem

I I use Cat. 5. or Cat 6. Cable for my DSL MODEM I just want to know how it will work when both cables have Four Pairs of wire but thy are used for two diferant things??

CAT. 5.  Is used for Fast Ehernet Network 100 M.b.p.s. Four Pairs of Wires.
CAT. 6. Is used for Gigabit Network 1,000 M.b.p.s Four Pairs of Wires.

If they both have Four Pairs of wires in them how can CAT. 6. send more Data?

Cat 6 can only send more data if the network is a gigabit network.

Basically, the only difference between cat 5 and cat 6 cable is the gauge of the wire.  Cat 6 cables also have a separator which handles crosstalk better.

How many wires are in a CAT 1. cable and are they still used today?

you definately don't want to use cat 1 cable in fact I don't think you can get that cable anymore. Cat5 is pretty much standard these days and faster much faster than cat 1 cable. Also cat 1 is used primarly for voice communications and it is not suitable for data

you could use booth cat 5 or cat 6, it will work with any of those type of cables, don't buy cross over. The Cat 6 have a better protection to the cable more than cat 5 cable.
