Fan keeps coming on over and over....LOUD
    « on: June 19, 2008, 03:42:43 AM »
I've been having a very weird problem lately with my internal fan. It seems like when i do anything...For instance...Open Mozilla to browse the internet, my internal fan will kick in and stay on for like 5 minutes at a time. Whenever i run any application it will come on and start a cycle of on and off for up to a half hour. Sometimes it will come on by it self for no reason when the computer is just sitting there. I tried cleaning the dust off of the vents and cleaning the motherboard and internal fans with no luck. I also tried to move it out into the open with no luck.  What can i do to stop this fan from going crazy ?  Any help would be very much appreciated...THANKS !!!!

Perhaps all the computer is trying to do is keep the computer cool.

I suggest downloading Speedfan and posting the temperatures.

Speedfan says the CPU is 66C or 67C at all times.  Is there a safe way to set it so the fans will only come on when it gets to a certain temperature ? Thanks for your help !!!!

Are those idle temperature? Those are pretty hot for a computer.

I'm not sure about any software that will do this for you but I suggest, for now, you get another fan (an external fan like a tower fan or something) and aim it directly at your computer.

See if this helps your 'fan spinning very loud' question.   ;)

If that is the cpu running idle... I would suggest you get a better heatsink and fan... or, I would remove the heatsink you have and use some quality thermal paste.

I tried pointing a fan at the computer and it didn't seem to help. CPU temperature is 68C 69C at the moment.  The computer has a Pentium4 519 (P) 3.06 GHz inside.... Here is more info on the computer...http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1144703&docname=c00487770

I thought i would add that the temperature has gotten as high as 80C with only me browsing the internet. It was very brief and quickly went back down to 68C. right now it's idle temperature  is 69C or 70C....  I have a feeling this is not normal....What can i do to correct this problem ?

you can buy an aftermarket heatsink.

            http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?minorcatid=1023&subminorcatid=28

any socket 775 heatsink will work in your computer. pick one according to your budget and your tastes. im pretty sure any one of the CPU heatsinks listed there will be better then your stock cooler.

Your Pentium max, temps, depending on model, are listed at 67.7-72.8C, so I wouldn't even use the computer, until apply some fixes.
