How do I eliminate Vista's need for WWW. in address bar?
    « on: June 29, 2008, 06:48:57 AM »
With windows Vista, every time I type in an URL in the address box without the "www.", I get a "Windows cannot find 'computerhope.com'Check the spelling and try again"  error" from Vista and it wont proceed. As soon as I add the "www."  it goes stgraight to the website. Is there a setting that will either automatically add the "www." or eliminates the need for the "www."?  My ME and XP never needed it, why go backwards?

Translating the data in the Location Bar into a web address is the job of DNS servers - perhaps yours changed. A switch of service providers will (usually) result in a change in DNS server.

For both IE and FF, if you're going to a .com address, just type the domain name into the Location Bar, e.g., computerhope, and use CTRL+ENTER.

There are other key combinations: SHIFT + ENTER = .net address; CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER = .org address.

        Hope this helps.

SHIFT + ENTER = .net works for me in Firefox but not in IE.

@Soybean - I think you're right - I also can't get SHIFT + ENTER  to work in IE7; I can't get CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER to work either. I don't use IE except for Win Updates, no excuse for posting bad info, though; thanks for the catch!

Yet another reason to use FF! :)
