Get image file from MSN Messenger background

First of all I detest MSN Messenger and all its incarnations - this isn't for me, it's for a friend.

He needs to retrieve an image from a background which has been shared with him by a friend.
This other friend is on holiday so he can't ask them to send the image.
I've taken a look and it's as a .dat file, is there any way to retrieve the original image from this?

Windows Live Messenger?

I hate Windows Live so I have 7.5.

That's exactly what I needed!
I had tried opening the .dat files before with my usual program, Paint.NET, but it didn't work at all.
I never found that thread despite searching for a good while.
