    Firmware problems.
    « on: July 10, 2008, 12:17:50 AM »
I have a DVD Burner that's not working with a full windows installation.

I know it works because I was able to use it to install Windows XP and all my drivers. I can use it outside of XP (IE I can boot from it) and I can use it right after a fresh XP install (IE I can use it to install all the drivers.)

I'm guessing it's an issue with the firmware, but I'm not absolutely sure. Perhaps one of you guys could help me figure out the problem.

Does it show in Windows Explorer?
Does it show in Devices Manager without any errors?

Yeah, it shows up in both.

I can even put an audio CD in and auto-run will occur, but if I tell it to play it will freeze.

Try it in another machine...if it does the same thing it needs replaced.
Brand new dual layer DVD burners are about 40 Bucks @ newegg.com

P.S. You could also try a new ribbon cable for a few Bucks.

      You may also try:
      1. Uninstall drive. It'll be reinstalled upon reboot.
      2. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
      You'll see two items:
      - ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
      - ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.
