I don't think that SAS is free for real time protection.

Yep, it's not free. I can give a link for a 20% off discount if anybody wants it.

In my opinion, it's better to avoid latest AVG version.

Agreed.  I supported it at first, but I have run into an insane amount of problems and as a result, I am now trying to reformat my hard drive for the third time...

Not later, then last night, on this board, someone's computer lost sound, was "miraculously" solved by just uninstalling AVG.

My 2˘ - I use Avast!: anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-rootkit and auto update for free. I loved AVG 7.5 but was lucky enough to read about all of the problems with v8 before installing it. I had used Avast! on my Vista side and installed it on the XP side. Zero problems.

I also use Spyware Terminator real time without the heuristics, and, no Web Guard.

SpyWareBlaster, not quite sure how to classify it but it protects real time without using any system resources.

Threatfire is supposed to be good but I haven't tried it.

On demand: SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot (no Teatimer), A squared free.

Lots of choices, limahl - best of luck!

It works the same way Spybots Immunize feature does. It puts bad sites into the HOSTS file so if you happen onto that site anything malicious should be blocked by the browser.

Thanks for the link - I knew that Teatimer and Spywareblaster worked more or less the same, that's why I don't use Teatimer.

Spywareblaster also introduces a list of cookies to block.

Question: My Hosts file was not altered by Spywareblaster - is this normal?

Teatimer is something totally different.....and a big PITA.

As far as I`m aware, Spyware Blaster works by setting killbits in the registry.

I meant that Immunize and  Spywareblaster were somewhat the same - and I agree about Teatimer.

I thought that you were saying here that Spywareblaster was adding sites to the Hosts file - did I mis-read? My Hosts file is not altered by Spywareblaster.

Hmm, I thought it added to the Hosts file but the more I read on it I'm realizing it doesn't. Looks like it adds changes to the Registry.
