    Gaming Laptop - Help !
    « on: July 31, 2008, 06:25:04 PM »
Okay, I just bought an IBuyPower Custom Gaming Laptop, I was just wondering if it is able to run new games, like Crysis.

    SPECS:
    Processor ( [New !!!] Intel® Core 2 Duo Mobile T8100 Dual-Core Processor (2x 2.1GHz/3MB Cache/800FSB) )

    Memory ( 4 GB(2 GB X2) DDR2-667 PC5300 [Notebook Memory] Kingston HyperX Gaming Memory )

    Video Card ( Mobility 512MB NVIDIA GeForce GO 8600M GS PCI-Express 3D Video )

Hard Drive ( 250 GB 7200rpm Serial-ATA-150 Super Slim Notebook Hard Drive )

    CD-RW/DVD-RW Drive ( 8x Dual Format DVD±R/±RW + 16x CD-R/RW Combo Drive [Battalion 101 SLC-700] )

Operation System ( Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32-Bit )

    Flash Media Reader/Writer ( Built-in 3-in-1 Media Card Reader/Writer [Notebook] )

    Thanks for the help! :)

I don't know much about the new game specs, but your computer specs tell me you should at least be able to play them. I also know that a laptop is no match for a desktop with similar specs.

The only thing that strikes me is the 8600m graphics card.  The 8600 series wasn't made for intensive gaming, and I'm not sure the mobile version would be much different.  I'm sure it would play crysis, but I wouldn't expect to play on high setting/resolutions.  I'm by no means saying it's a weak laptop, but if you can find a more powerful video card I'd suggest it.

Here's a little bit of a comparison, but it's using the desktop version of the card:

You can't upgrade laptop video cards.
I've said it before, I'll say it again - laptops are not meant for gaming.  Companies that sell gaming laptops must make so much money from all the overpriced expensive components that they shove in there and sell as a gaming laptop.
Don't get me wrong, it'll be fine for older games, or newer games at low settings.
But next year's games?  No way.

you have a nice laptop but if you're wanting to max out your game settings a high resolutions, it's going to be hard work.

I have not seen a laptop yet that will let you overclock it. I could be wrong, but because of power and heat issues, the motherboards in laptops do not allow overclocking.

I read a forum yesterday of a guy that said he overclocked his 8600 in his laptop, and he said he used a program called Rivatune or something like that, cant really remeber the name of it.  ???

I have heard of people using software programs to overclock. But I would not use them on a laptop. Heat becomes a big issue, and it will almost certainly void your warranty.
