If you dont have anything you want to save you can wipe the drive. If you change the board on this up grade you can use the old drive as  a slave along with the new drive.

Will all the files I currently have on the hard drive still be there after i make the upgrade?

If you add a new drive to the upgrade and use the old drive as a slave no files will be lost

Ok, if you use a new mother board on your upgrade & it is not the same as your old one you will not be able to use the same hd without starting fresh. If you use a board with the identical chipset it should work

Best to start clean on a new build....
Format the drive.
You're data will be gone.
