    rundll32 error, more
    « on: August 18, 2008, 04:40:11 PM »
Hey guys. I'm posting this for a friend.

He seems to be having a problem with his computer: When he tries to load a game or such, it says Windows Host Process (rundll32) has failed. Also, his browser will not load either. But curiously enough, It works in Safe Mode. Does anyone know the problem here? He has tried scanning for viruses and such already, please help. ^^  He's running Vista, BTW.

Full error message is needed, plus computer info: processor speed, amount of RAM, hard drive size/free space.

As in run. He tries to run the game, but it wont load and gives him a notice saying rundll32 has stopped working.

As for the specs, 2.60 ghz processor, 2046 mb RAM (i double checked with him, he says it is 2046 instead of 2048), and 326 GB Hard Drive (After the stuff thats already taken) and 246 GB Free.

I'm assuming, the error says: Windows Host Process (Rundll32) has stopped working, correct?
But, let's see about patio's question.
Also, is it some particular game, or some other programs, as well.
      Is Nero installed there?

Well, the game he has most recently tried is Starcraft, which failed obviously, but he has tried more than 1 game/disc, and none of them will start up, instead bringing up the error that you mentioned:Windows Host Process (Rundll32) has stopped working. As far as I know he has tried at least 3 games/discs, and no, Nero is not installed.
As for the version, I asked him and he says Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit operating system.

Is it new issue, or has been there for a while?
Did computer come with Vista preinstalled?
Does your friend have any Vista related DVDs?

Q 1: The issue started a few days ago, but his computer has been a little odd for about a week

Q 2: Yes, Vista was preinstalled when he bought the computer

          Q 3: No

          Did you try System Restore?

The only explanation hes telling me is at first it would load his software, then got progressively worse, and now it wont.

Yes, he has tried system restore without any noticeable fixes or changes.

            Try this:
Type msconfig in Vista's search box and hit enter to open up the System Configuration Utility window.
Click on Services, and check in the "Hide all Microsoft services" checkbox.
            Click on "Disable All" button.
Now click on "Startup" tab, and then click on "Disable All" button again.
Press OK button and then "Restart" button on the following window.
Effectively, you have turned off all non-microsoft services and startups.

            See, if the problem persist.

Ok, he has now tried that and it did not work. However, he is now able to load his browser, so at least some progress has been made.

Is computer free of malware or viruses? (If you post HiJack This Log, broni or patio can check for you whether or not it's clean)

And does the registry need cleaning?
