Laptop frezzes just before desktop icons load.

I dont know what more to say.
Im running xp home on a dell laptop.All was fine at lunch when i checked my email,when i came back this afternoon i wouldnt work anymore.
Ive tried the system restore with a couple of differnt dates but it still dosent load.
It will load in safe mode only,but not with anything else,such as safe mode networking etc..And some times even while in safe mode it freezes,such as trying to open the control panel.
Does anybody have any ideas or sugestions for me?

I guess i shoulve been more clearer, the computer will do nothing once my background page loads.Im seeing my normal background with out the icons or task bar or anything else.Right clicking or left clicking does nothing.The only thing that is there is my mouse pointer and it will move around but thats it.
It is a dell inspion 4000 laptop running authentic xp home,however i dont have the xp install disc.
Ive tried searching forums but was unable to find anything that fit my situation.
The computer worked fine at luch yesterday,i checked my email,had no messages,then turned the computer off.I then came back about 4 hours later turned it on and ran into this problem,i didnt download or install anything.It just happend out of the blue.

If you log onto Safe Mode, can you try a System Restore?

Ive tried but i didnt work..
I have also tried sevreal differnt dates.
I borrowed an install disc from a friend so im trying to repair using it.
