What is the best email client that is free?
    « on: August 26, 2008, 07:23:04 PM »
What is the best email client that is free? I had enough with Outlook Express. One minute I get an error and next minute it's all good. What the *censored* is that all about? I need to switch email clients. The only 2 things I change in the email options are to set read receipts and leave the email on the server. Whatever email someone would recommend, how do I set it in the email client? I also would like an email client that is 100% free, no shareware or anything. Just freeware. Here is the error that keeps coming on and off.

The server responded with an error. Account: 'pop.rcn.com', Server: 'pop.rcn.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Cannot connect to POP server 207.172.157.20 (207.172.157.20:110), bind error 10055', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90

Personally I prefer Gmail. The spam filter is very good, it's free with plenty of space and I can check my mail from any computer.

But for an email client check out Thunderbird

    T-bird is also portable. http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/thunderbird_portable

Thank you for your reply. I have a question about Thunderbird. I use Mozilla Firefox as a web browser and will Thunderbird re-write over Mozilla?

I haven't used it lately but it is a separate install. They won't interfere with each other at all.

I use Agent as my primary (not a freebie) but for some work accounts use Thunderbird - and it is very satisfactory - and a stand-alone as evil mentions.

Doubt there is much to beat that in free software.

How do I leave my email's on the server or will it automatically be left on the server?

In an email account setup - you have the option to leave on server or not.

Just checked - in server settings - yep - checkbox to select this or not.

Thank you Chris. I found it. So far I like Thunderbird better then Outlook Express.

Just thinking here - maybe a need to differentiate between webmail as against system integral client.

Yahoo, gmail etc all do fine it seems but for a stand alone I think as said, my choice is Thunderbird ... with of course a backup plan to use an ISP webmail in case of problems.

Yes, email (web mail) and an email client are two totally different things. Don't ask me to explain though ;)
