Keith, Welcome to the CH forums. There are probably many portable Hd's that will satisfy your needs and i think it would be more productive if you shopped for the best price once you have determined what you want. If you don't need to be at the leading edge of the technology (IE one of the 1 tetra byte units that are now being offered) then drives up to 250GB are readily obtainable below $100.00 U.S. Fry's electronics (both the stores and the online) http://shop1.Fry's.com/template/harddrives/  will give you some idea of the costs. Others on the forum seem to favour "newegg" but i personally have no experience with them. Another alternative is to convert an internal hd to an external with a case enclosure. I have done this with a number of hd's of varying capacity and they work well. If you happen to have an internal that you are not using this could be a cheaper option. The cases connect via USB ports and are totally portable. goodluck ,truenorth

I have a 160 GB Western Digital Passport drive which I've never had any problems with. Reasonably portable and powers itself from the USB port - no other power needed; may need a "Y" adapter to use two ports if USB 1.1.

I don't know if the drives come with backup/synchronization software.
If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?

And the other option which should be mentioned ...if size is really an issue this can be done with a laptop HDD and enclosure as well...
However you can expect to pay about a third to a half more per Gig choosing this alternative as laptop drives are more expensive.

As far as shyncing there are many software apps out there...some FREE.
I use the FREE version of SyncBack and it fits all my needs.

Good Luck and Welcome to CH !
