Windows XP Power management. Stand- by locks up Compaq laptop

When in standby mode any action of mouse, touch panel or keyboard locks laptop up requiring AC disconnect and battery removal.
Only pressing the Fn key returns it to life from stand-by.
Ane suggestions?

What laptop model is this?

This problem was always there. I just started using hibernation instead. Laptop is Compaq Presario 3045

No, the screen is dark.

laptop does not wake up and locks up.

Windows absolutely stinks with any of their Power Management features...
I for one don't use any of them at all.
I know this doesn't solve your issue but it's just how it is and always has been.
