Had same problems with Companion 5 as you have plus Pod had volume full on all the time. Even dragging a window to a new position would cause Bose to quit. Disconnected everthing except mouse and Bose from computer and still had problem. Changed out cables. Talked with Factory many times, they sent new Pod which fixed volume control. Installed new 5 port USB-PCI card with only Bose connected, still same problem. It would work majority of time if the only thing I had going was music. Opening up new applications or internet would cause it to crash. Could disconnect power to base box, wait 15 seconds, reattach power, then adjust Pod and would work until tried something else at same time. Also downloaded latest Vista service pak (update) that was supposed to help, it didn't. After about 6 calls with factory, have acquired RMA to send in for warranty repairs, will take 3 weeks. It worked great for the first nine months.
