windows\system32\config\system corrupt, no boot
« on: October 14, 2008, 12:18:56 PM »
My laptop will not boot up and message indicates config\system32\CONFIG\SYSTEM file problem.  The dark screen indicates repair file by starting windows setup using original CD-Rom and select r at first screen.  When I insert the original Toshiba disc which contains XP, and select r, it leads me into a complete hard disc erase, which of course will destroy a lot of valuable files.  What do I do?  Thanks for any help.  --jrkelly

The error message indicates that your registry is corrupt.   To preserve data you could install the hdd in another pc and copy files.

MS KB307545 applies but data loss is almost certain.

    Good luck

    Do not select "r".
