    Built-In Wireless Card doesn't work
    « on: October 16, 2008, 11:55:10 PM »
I have a HP Pavilion dv2315nr.  It has a built in wireless card, Broadcom I believe.  I have went to the HP site and downloaded/installed the driver but nothing happened.  It says that I have installed it and it shows that it is installed but I am unable to access the wireless internet card.  If it helps the light on the card is always orange, I thought it is supposed to be blue.  Can anyone help I would appreciate it?

Has it worked in the past?

    When did it stop working?

I just got it from a friend, he said that he reinstalled the system software.  It was working before the reformatting but now it doesn't.  At one time (I don't know what I did),  I slide the switch on it and it poped up a add new hardware and I installed it and when I restarted it, everything was the same

Get a new PCI NIC card...there about 15 Bucks and come with drivers.
You may have to turn off the onboard one but probably not.

So it is a hardware failure, there is nothing I can do software wise?  I have a extend HP warranty on it but I feel kind of scepticle about sending it to them.

This is a laptop, correct?  Are you sure you installed the correct driver?

Please dis-regard this as it is a notebook machine.

Advice wasn't far off, Patio -- one can get a plug in wireless card in the thirty dollar US range which plugs into the PC or PCMCIA slot (I don't know what they call it, these days).  I believe one can also use a USB port plugin for a wireless card if the on-board doesn't work.

It is for a laptop.  There are no PCMIA slots,  I know I can use a USB wireless card but I actually want to get the wireless card that is built in fixed.  I did installed the correct driver.  My laptop is a HP Pavilion dv2000 series Model No. is dv2315nr

What operating system was put on after the reformat?  If the card was working before, it has to be a problem with the new operating system or the driver.

It was just a recovery disk.  When it was bought it had Vista on it.  Then he installed XP, then when he gave it to me, he put Vista back on it.

The laptop currently has Vista.  What version of Vista does it have?

The wireless worked when it had XP.  It is not working now that Vista has been reapplied to the computer.  Did the wireless work before XP was installed?  It must have worked before, too.

Yeah it did work before I don't know why it is not working now.  Does the orange light on it mean anything?

I don't know about the orange light -- probably that it's not on line.

If you are familiar with Device Manager in Control Panel, does the Device Manager indicate any hardware problems?

Yeah I am familiar with the device manager.  There is no hardware failures or nothing.  I doesn't even say its there.  I have installed the HP Broadcom Wireless Adapter software (it's their driver for it) and it says that the software is installed but it is not doing anything
