My friend just called and said he had about 20 windows ::) open when his computer froze (he doesn't know how much RAM he has). After trying ^ alt del, he shut down using the power button. Each time he tried to re-boot, he would only get to a black screen with F2 and F12 as options. Neither responded when clicked.

I had him re-boot hitting F8, again with F1, then F2, then F12 with no success. The only related solutions I've seen online require that the computer at least boots up to Windows.  I kind of recall that in "the old days" when a computer would crash, you could start up using a boot disk. According to him, he has a "Dell Inspiron 530, Vista, 2.2 Ghtz, 2mb cache, Sd Ram at 667 Mhtz".

Anyone have an idea of what he can try? Thanks!  :)

Yes, I believe he does. I suggested that he try to run the re-installation disk, but nothing happened when he just put it in the drive or tried to get it going with the "run" command.

You need to boot from the disc.

Get into the BIOS and change the Boot Order so that the CD/DVD Drive is first in line.

      Then perform a Repair Install:

That makes a lot of sense. Only one thing: Despite trying F1, F2, F12 at start-up, the screen remained black with only the F2 and F12 options--neither of which responded when clicked.

Ah....So you can't get into the BIOS at all?
What about pressing Delete instead of those function keys?

Also, it is possible the CD/DVD drive is already set to boot first. Have you tried booting from it yet?

No, he hasn't tried to hit the delete key yet.

I had him try to boot from the CD/DVD drive, but no response. It just sat there.

I need to go to bed...I'm in New York where it's now after midnight. I gather you're in the midwest someplace.  Thanks. David

I had my friend click (and then, a second time, hold) the del button immediately after powering up, but nothing changed.   :-[

Ask him to keep pressing the button, not to hold it down.

This may seem stupid, but is the keyboard plugged in?
Why is this thus?  What is the reason for this thusness?
