Something is using my e-mail address to send spam!
    « on: November 24, 2008, 05:17:20 PM »
One of my friends just sent me a copy of 2 e-mails that were sent with my e-mail address that I never sent.
I did a avast, hijackthis, superantispy, and malwarebyes (came up clean) and here are the logs.

I did find something with avast on some older files I removed from a old dying hard drive from another computer. They have been on this computer for over a month and I though they were scanned and clean. I also have not had any issues till now.

Any and all ideas welcome to fix this.

It may not be your email address, email services like eml.cc offer an alias and basically it masks your real address with the alias and allows you to use any other address whatever the alias is ,

dont take my advice on it, wait for someone "Qualified" to answer your question

The fact that is was someone in my address book that makes me worry. I have not have a 2nd person tell me they got the e-mails. My address book is mostly customers and don't want to spamming them without my knowledge.

Sorry for the wait.  Things are a little busy with the holiday season and upcoming finals.

To be honest, I'm not very familiar with Avast logs (was never a big fan of it), so I can't tell if the infections it found were removed.  If not, then you should have it remove them.

But one thing I can tell you is that when you try to download hacking tools, you are downloading an infection about 97% of the time.  And in many cases, you are also letting a hacker in.  You downloaded several trojans and quite frankly, if what you described is true, then there's a chance that one of these trojans allowed someone to get information from your computer.

It's possible that the e-mails are a strange coincidence.  Who is your internet provider?  Cablevision?  What e-mail do you use?  Yahoo, Hotmail, your internet provider, or somewhere else?  If this is just an infection, I can help you.  Simply follow these instructions and post the logs (I know you posted some already, but we need new ones)...

However, if there has been hacking involved, then I can't help you and you will have to contact your ISP.

My internet provider is Time Warner.

          Here are the logs.

Well, in all three logs, nothing malicious shows up.  The only thing that strikes me as odd are these two entries:
          O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{C6F03057-0DEF-4ED3-94B5-F07A7215627D}: NameServer = 167.206.254.2,167.206.254.1
          O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{DD86BEC9-6954-4F2E-BE87-ABEF0CD479A2}: NameServer = 167.206.254.2,167.206.254.1

You say you have Time Warner, but these belong to Cablevision.  Did you have Cablevision in the past?  I remember hearing rumors that Time Warner was planning on putting in bids for Cablevision, but I'm fairly certain that hasn't happened yet.

Anyway...although it's a bit odd, the IP numbers are legitimate.  If you have had Cablevision in the past, then remove these entries with HijackThis.  If not, then you may want to ask Time Warner about it (removing them could break your internet connection, but it's simple to fix if you want to try it).

As for the problem with your e-mail...I don't have a way of knowing if someone is hacking your system because hackers typically don't leave telltale files behind.  Only Time Warner can help you to determine this.  Keep in mind that it's entirely possible that there is a spambot that is merely disguising itself as you.  Without ever gaining access to your computer or anything on it, anyone could pretend to be you.  All they have to do is know what your e-mail address is.  In this case, all you can really do is warn your friends and get ahold of Time Warner to find out if they could possibly trace the e-mails.
