    remove/replace aol
    « on: November 25, 2008, 08:23:16 AM »
    Hello
I want to replace aol with something else, but it is all that I've had for eight years, and all that I know about.
I believe that simply disinstalling it will rid me of it.
I know that any files in my mailbox will have to be relocated, and saved.
    I don't know anything else.
I have a cable connection. Can you give me a suggestion for a replacement?
I will also need some instructions.
    Thanks
    Frank

For email i like ThunderBird and for a browser i use FireFox.

Depending on who your e-mail account is with you may be able to still use the account but you would access it through TBird instead of the AOL browser.
ThunderBird is loaded with features...easy to set up and supports multiple email accounts and addresses.
Both of these fine products are free from the good folks at the Mozilla Foundation.

In Firefox go to Tools/Options/Main Page...
Here you can set your start page to whatever you want.

I wonder if Firefox can provide groups of similar websites on a "tab".
          Maybe with their "fastfile"
          I'm thinking "Sports",with Giants,Rangers,Espn,Foxsports,NYTimessports.
          Also "News","Outdoors",

In Firefox you can do this yourself by customising...
Open Bookmarks just for testing purposes and choose Organise bookmarks...
On the upper left select organise and create a new folder...name it what you like.
Now drag and drop 2 or 3 of your bookmarks into it.

You can now drag the folder to the bar under the location bar and it will contain all the bookmarks you placed in it.
Left cliking it produces a drop down menu of each bookmark...clik any one of them and you're there...

          Hope this helps.

            I'll be here Frank...
Also just so you know let's say you are at a site that you want to revisit.
You can hit CTRL D and it will open your bookmarks folder where you can save it in any sub folder you've created or you can simply hold down the left mouse button in the icon in the address bar and drag it to that same bar under the address bar and it will save it there.

              Trouble,already.
When I click BOOKMARKS,and select ORGANIZE,I get LIBRARY.
              My upper left menu is:
              Bookmark Toolbar
              Bookmark Menu
              Unsorted Bookmarks
There is no ORGANIZE on the page

              OOOoooops...
I forgot they renamed it to Library with the newer versions...
On the left hand side is the Folder view...these are the automatically installed ones. To see what's inside any of them simply left clik on one and the contents will show in the right pane of the Library window.
Any of these can be dragged and dropped into another folder to organise them as you wish.
The Organise button is on the upper left.

NOTE: The Bookmarks Toolbar Folder contains any bookmarks that resice on the toolbar directly underneath the Address Bar in the Firefox browser window.
Hope i haven't confused things further.
