Windows Shut Down

hi here is the entire scenario for the past few months occasionally my computer has had this problem where ill be on the internet and a bunch of windows will just pop up repeatedly i figured it was a virus (since my file numbers were always increasing) but i could never find anything so i would just restart my computer

but the last time this happened, i turned on my computer it would show dell media direct as loading and then a blue screen would open i would say "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to this computer" it would show the stop error 0x00000073 CONFIG_LIST_FAILED 0x73 and tell me to start in safe mode to remove the problem ( a note at the bottom it would say physical memory dump complete or something like that).

i looked at all sites for help and all of them said start in safe mode...heres my problem, when i try to start in safe mode the blue error screen shows up but with the stop code 0x00000007b now startup method would get me to my home screen.

ive checked all the bios settings and theyre fine and i cant figure this out... any help?

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

When I try to start in safe mode, this pops up:

The same first 2 paragraphs of the larger message (above) and then these steps to follow:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

CONFIG_LIST_FAILED error usually indicates low RAM, or low disk space.
Can you boot to Windows at all, or you're stuck with errors?

Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")

Processor type : intel core 2 duo
I have 2048 mb installed of memory and 2038 avalible

That's all I can get sorry I can getfrom the boot menu setup. Should I change the boot sequence and reinstall vista?

This can also indicate wrong/faulty drivers...been experimenting with new drivers lately ? ?

hi its me i changed the boot sequence so cds would launch first
i reinstalled vista and everything else and im fine i just have a minor problem which i am going to start a new topic for it but thanks for your help

I tend to think that this is some sort of tricky virus.  I've had this happen to T W O computers in a week's time... one of them being a hardly used Compaq desktop barely a year old, the second one being an ancient Toshiba Satellite laptop.

Since I'm not a computer whiz, I could be wrong, but has anybody explored that possibility?

doubtful. STOP errors/BSOD's indicate a error occured in Kernel mode code; virus code being written for kernel mode is nearly non-existent, and even where it is, XP and higher prompt whenever a driver is installed (IIRC).

Hey, I also got locked out of my computer several days ago. I tried several free software. It took me two days and got quite messy. Unfortunately none of them work for me. Finally I made it work with password genius. The good news is that it works. The bad news is it is not free.
