    Windows ME volume label
    « on: January 06, 2009, 09:12:09 AM »
I have an older computer for my son it is running with Windows ME. He thought he would try to install XP on this computer and I can't get the computer to boot now. I am in the process of trying to erase everything and a question popped up. "Volume label (11 characters, enter for none)?" What do I do here. I am not an expert by no means. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

You can simply hit Enter for "none"...
The Volume label names the drive itself but it is not needed and it can cause issues if you are ever trying data recovery and you've forgetten it.
    None is the better choice.

I think I finally got it. I erased the hard drive and finally got the Windows ME CD to install. Today I had time to just sit down and mess with it. I don't know for sure what I did but it is installing and has 27 more minutes to go. Hopefully this will take care of it so I don't have to buy a new one. Work's not that great right now!
        Thanks all the replies!

As you can tell I've never really messed with erasing hard drives and reprogramming. I have another question that should be pretty simple to someone who knows about these things. The Windows ME loaded and I can use it. The only problem is the picture is really bad. The lowest pixels and it won't change. Do I have to have another program installed to get a better picture or is there upgrades or something? Thanks!

Because you have re-installed Windows all your Device Drivers are wiped out.
Find out more about the machine by DLoading and installing Everest Home and running a scan.
Save it to a text file on your desktop and copy and paste only the Computer Summary portion and we can assist in tracking down your drivers...unless you have a CD labelled Drivers that came with the machine.

For now though you can right clik an empty area of the Desktop and select Properties...there you can change the resolution.
Choose 1024X768 for noew and 32bit color if it's available.
On WinME if i remember correctly you need to re-boot for these settings to take effect.
          Good Luck !

Your probably getting tire of my problems by now but I have another. My other computer as I said is up and running but I still have to find the drivers as patio told me. My new problem is I have installed a wireless system and I'm trying to get the internet up and running on the computer. Everything installed great but when I try to connect Windows ME goes directly to the internet connection wizard and I can't get any farther. After the wireless connection was installed it showed that I had an 80% signal and everything was installed so I thought I was good. I spent about 3 hours with tech support for my Embarq internet connection with no solution, I finally had to leave and couldn't stay on the phone no longer. He said the biggest problem was the Windows ME.

In that case, you better stay in ONE thread.

Sorry, I thought it would be easier when I first started posting (first time posting here). Is there a way to delete or combine the other post or just let it be.

                  Thanks Broni!
I have made some progress. I can now connect to the internet on by messed up computer thanks to all the help.
I am still having problems with my display, 16 colors 640 x 480 pixels only. I took patios advice and went to Everest Home and got a summary. I have a Standard PCI Graphics adapter (VGA) version 011, Motherboard chipset Intel 82440BX and from another source I found a class guide and device ID but I still can't figure out how to install or update drivers so I can have a better display.
                  Thanks!
