    My computer wont turn on
    « on: January 20, 2009, 07:10:41 PM »
Hello, I built a brand new computer and things were working fine at first. I was getting BSOD's occasionally though. One day i went to go on the internet and the computer just shut off. I tried turning it back on and it would boot for a second, then turn off. And Now it doesnt even do that, it just does not start up.. I thought i did something to the power supply so i returned it and received a new one. I put it in today but it STILL doesnt turn on... no fans start up or anything, just the power button flashes for a quick second. The motherboard has two lights on it when i have the cpu, motherboard and 1 stick of ram plugged in, which the colors are blue led and yellow led. I dont know what to do or how to find out whats wrong with what... Its not the power supply, but maybe the MB itself?

    My Specs Are:
    Motherboard - Nvidia 780i
    Power Supply - Antec 650W
    Ram - two 2gb Gskill DDR2
    CPU - Q6600
    Gfx - 9800gtx

I would make sure the Cpu/Heatsink and fan are properly in place and seated correctly, and that you have used some thermal paste between the Cpu and heatsink.

It has thermal paste on it, yes. And not to sound stupid or anything, but what would show that its not seated properly besides wobbling? And if its fine what else could be the problem? i know its not PSU

Im going to check my CPU to see, but i took the stock off the q6600 and put on an AC freezer 7 pro heatsink/fan which i did have a lil trouble installing because the *censored* push and twists were ridiculous -.- ... But Is there ANY way to know if its my motherboard, CPU, or ram or something? its not PSU because i replaced that and still no luck

Try the Cpu first, it sounds like your computer was shutting down due to the Cpu overheating or the heatsink not fitted correctly.

Also, when i put the power cord into PSU and flip on, my motherboard shows a BLUE LED and then i press the power and it then shows a YELLOW LED as well... what does this mean?

and i have the MB power connected, 1 ram stick, and the gfx card is in but not plugged into power..

So what is the reason for not having power connected to your Graphics Card  ???

The stock cooler for the 6600 works fine...i run between 39c at idle to around 45-47c under load so don't believe everything you read about it being inadequate,
If the card is in the slot it should have the 4/6  pin power hooked up whether you are running it or not...the system will see it as an incomplete circuit.
As far as your LED reeadouts you should read your MBoard manual for that.

What brand and wattage is this PSU ? ?

I cant find it in the manual anywhere...it has to be there but i just cant find it. And i have antec 650w

And i will put the power into the gfx card, or should i take it out completely?

what signs will show overheating with the cpu? liek do i have to remove the heatsink/fan to notice?

No it will shut down between 5 and 30 seconds...
What are you willing to try out of what's been suggested so far ? ?

i guess taking off the heatsink/fan to see if any damage would be a good plan. Just when i take it off do i have to reapply thermal paste and clean it off and stuff? because i have none with me.. if not cpu then what?

Oh, and when my comp was running, i got some BSOD's which bothered me...kinda occurred for no reason, except few when i started game so i rolled back driver, but all my temps looked normal according to speedfan. i think the cores were around 50 degrees if i played a game.

BSOD's were a concern WHEN it was working... but randomly shut down and now this

It needs to be cleaned off/reapplied EVERY time you dissamble the heatsink combo...
