norton antivirus - need some help
    « on: February 07, 2009, 05:16:14 AM »
ok, so I have an acer aspire 7520, which I installed norton antivirus on about a year ago. it's had relatively few problems untill about the last month and a half when it has developed a problem where it will just suddenly spaz out and the screen goes all funny and patterned and it has to be restarted. this started off happening once or twice infrequently and now seems to be just about daily. I have run virus scans which come up negative, and the only thing I can see as the explanation is that when I went to the norton antivirus center it said that my "intrusion prevention" is turned off so that I am liable to attacks from the internet. I tried clicking "fix now" and it didn't work. I tried going to options and settings and everything and turning it on and nothing will work. does anyone know how I can turn on the intrusion prevention?!
thank you to anyone who can help!

    Can you elaborate on this?

What are you doing when it happens?
    What does it look like?
Is this a laptop or desktop?

it is a desktop, and the pattern looks different each time depending on what on the screen. if I am watching a dvd it starts looking/sounding like its skipping lots and then just suddenly the screen goes funny. its kind of hard to describe... next time it happens I will take a picture and upload it...

Sounds like a bad Video Card....or bad monitor....

Can you try another monitor? If it still happens, can you try another video card?

        Hmmmm.....This may be difficult then.....

What model is the laptop and how old is it?
        Is it still under warranty?

erm, well it's an aspire 7520, and I have only had it for about a year... I think maybe just over a year, I have a feeling its not under warranty...  tbh, all I really want to do is get the intrusion prevention of the norton anti-virus turned on, and then if it is still having problems after that I will probably just bring it into a technician at PC world or something...?

In my opinion, Norton should be removed.
There are plenty other free alternatives which are just as good. (AVG Free, Avira, Avast, ect...)

If you think this problem may be because of a form of malware, I would start a new topic in this section of the Forums and post the three logs from here:

well, I don't want to remove it because I have already paid for it and it has worked pretty well for me over the last couple of years, and plus, my mum wants me to have it and its not worth the hassle of the argument that would ensue.
all I want is to find someone who can help me turn this silly intrusion prevention on; can ANYONE do that?! please... anyone?..it's driving me crazy! 0.o

well the thing is, I don't actually understand what carbon said to do - was it advice on how to remove it? my parents are kind of experts I just really really don't want to ask them cause they are scary people and it will cause arguments...

ok blondie , carbon is sending you to a page where evilfantasy has a topic it is long but if you take your time and maybe get a friend in to help you and do what it and they say you will finish up with a clean and prefect pc

to remove norton , click start , click set program access and defaults , click change or remove programs , find norton , click , and then click remove

but do not do it until you have done as carbon and evil have told you

i had norton and it is rubbish , so know i have had 5 different security downloads on my pc for 2 years with no trouble and they are all free

as i said , they are all experts read under their name and see how high they have got or go into some of they posts and see the help they give

i only hope carbon comes back on and speaks to you when he sees this at the top of the page

Hmmmm, sorry for missing this topic.

                To remove Norton: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,34939.0.html

See if that changes anything. If not, feel free to install it again.

I still think it may be something to do with your hardware seeing as this happens at random intervals.
