    Application Run Problem
    « on: February 23, 2009, 08:24:28 AM »
I have been using a context menu program for well over a year & it has worked flawlessly...until about 6 or 8 weeks ago.  It always ran at start up, but now, for some reason, I have to re enter my serial key every time to make it work.  It still remembers all my settings, but will not run at start up.  It is Mmm+ by Hace Software.  I've gotten Avira to leave it alone, as well as the Windows Firewall.
I am running XP Home, SP3.
I am thinking maybe one of Windows Wonderful Updates screwed it up?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Have you contacted them about resetting/obtaining a new serial key ? ?
    Did you try re-installing ? ?

Yes, I have re installed it about 30 times.  It will work fine until I shut down.  Then I have the same problem when I start up again.  If it helps,  I tried installing the free version of the program & had the same results ?
The vendor thought it might be my anti virus,  which it isn't.  I am currently waiting to hear back from them.
I was getting 'Open File Security Warnings' at start up, until I set up the firewall to accept it.  It didn't make any difference other that I don't get the warning box anymore.  Should I ask the vendor for a new serial code anyway ?

I would...also inquire where it stores both the saved entries of data and the serial...

I have contacted the vendor about where it stores the data & am waiting for another reply.  He asked about whether I am running as Administrator, is that even an issue with XP ?  I am the only one on this computer.
And why would it have been alright for over a year...then all of a sudden, start acting up ?
Thanks for you help so far.

It may matter depending on the app but if you are the only user and there are no other accounts on the machine this is unlikely...
To test this boot to safemode and run the app to see if it behaves...

          Hi Patio,
Just so I'm clear about this.  In order to make the program work I have to run the .exe for it, then enter my serial key & it will work fine until I shut down my computer.  Then I have to do this all over again the next time I re start my machine.  Won't I technically be doing the same thing in Safe Mode ?  Then after I shut down & re start in Normal Mode I'll still be where I am now.
Before this problem ... I installed it once & it was there all the time.
          Thanks.

I have also found that if I shut the program down,  I can re start it no problem.  It only acts up after I shut off the computer.

            Hi Patio,

Started in Safe Mode, ran the .exe & entered my serial key.  The program worked properly while in Safe Mode.
Does that mean I'm OK as far as Administrative rights go  ?
            Any other ideas  ?
Still haven't heard back from the vendor about a new key or where things are stored.
            Thanks.

This would suggest the app has an issue with either a driver or an application that loads in full mode...
Kinda tough to diagnose that from where i'm sitting...
I have a few Context Menu custom tools around ...which one is this ? ?

It is call Mmm Plus by Hace Software.

              http://hace-software.com/mmm-plus.shtml

Would I be able to find the conflicting app or driver by closing everything that runs at start up,  then starting each one, one at a time.
It's too bad this turned into such a pain.  With it running it makes my context menus easy to use as you can move all the features you don't use often to a 'rarely used' folder without disabling or deleting them like you
do with ShellExView.  Some of my context menus are a mile long otherwise.
              Thanks.

Although tedious, yes this would be the way i would test it...

I will probably attempt to do that this evening or late tonight & I'll let you know if I find the conflicting program.  Thanks again for your insight.

                  Good Morning,

Well, staying up all night didn't help.  I did manage to find where it's stored & can actually see my serial key is in there.  Nothing from the developer either.  Would like to thank him in person right about now!
Any other ideas for me to try ?
