programs that start at booting up

Please pardon my ignorance, but i need to know how to control the programs that start when i boot up (using Windows xp sp2).  What i mean is after i turn on the computer, i have to wait while various programs load in the toolbar area (?? the area where my clock is), such as napster, quick time, photags express, etc.  Waiting for all these things to load takes a while, and many of them are unnecessary.  Thanks for any help i get!

Start/Run

Type msconfig and hit the OK button.

Click the Startup tab and select which programs you want to run at startup.

Don't go crazy on turning things off.  When in doubt, DON'T.  Turn off only the things you recognize as wanting off and Google everything else you're not sure of.

Before using msconfig, I would open each of those applications and see whether they provide a setting that allows you to choose not to have them launch during startup.

Have been using Anvir Taskmanager Free

It lists everything that runs at startup & allows you to disable or enable items.  It also has a handy startup
delay feature for programs you want to run after Windows finishes loading so as not to bog down your
startup time.  I found using msconfig is a pain if you don't know exactly what your shutting off.  Anvir has a lot of other features as well.

1.) install
2.) go START = CONTROL PANEL =  run STARTUP
3.) you will see 5 TABS [Startup user],[Startup common], [HKLM/Run],[HKCU/Run],[Run Once]
3.) unchecked all unnecessary you want. then APPLY done!
