Normally when you order DSL service they provide the modem...
You run a setup program once...enter your info and it is stored in the modem.

Yes .They provided me with a DSL modem.
        It is working fine.
But it is getting spoiled frequently by thunder - lightening's.
I would like to buy (won) a modem.

        Thank you

I would call your DSL tech support and have them replace it....

If you won a new modem than it should have a setup CD with it

If you want to try to hack your modem the setup disk will not do it for you. Also the DSL and cable companies cap them and if they find you have messed with them they ban you...for life.

Thank you Spoiler for the reply

I got the CD.I don't know there is a setup program in it.

I wanted to buy my own modem  to avoid unseemly arguments with the
Telephone company to get my damaged modem replaced (frequently)

So do you suggest I shouldnot own my own modem(DSL).
Is it illegal to own  and use a DSL modem?

          Thank you

Your modem could be replaced by your ISP...

During a thunderstorm...I'd recommend unplugging the modem from any power source.  This way, you wouldn't have to worry about replacing your modem.

Call your DSL company and have them replace your modem.

It is not illegal to have your own but if they own this one why not have them fix it? Also you can watch how its done and learn how to handle your own modem....

Telephone company also says I should unplug modem
during thunderstorms. But clouds gather at night and by morning
            the modem is nonfunctional.

This DSL modem is property of Telephone company given to me on
monthly rental. It takes nearly 2 weeks to get a damaged modem replaced,
i.e after a lot of arguments and haggling .

The setup program in CD is not asking me to enter my details
            (phone numb,name and password)
It is configuring automatically by contacting the Telephone exchange,it seems.

            Thank you for your suggestions.
I learned a lot about this instrument.
            Thank you.
