    SONY VAIO Integrated Keyboard Problem
    « on: April 13, 2009, 03:17:11 AM »
    Hello.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop which obviously has an embedded (or integrated if you like) keyboard. The problem with it is that when I type it either types a completely diferent key or some of the keys do not work. For example when I hit 'A' there is no input (response) but when I press 1, 2, 3, 4.. keys they do function quite normally.

I am currently using a USB keyboard which is rather painstaking.

I will be gleeful if you could help.

Did you pour something on your keyboard like water or something? This happens to me once a customer here accidentally pours syrup on the keyboard. When i go back and test the keyboard it types different keys that i don't know example is when i press "a" a different key will come out. So my only solution to that problem is buy another keyboard. Or, you can have it repaired.

No, I have not poured any sort of liquid over the keyboard. I am sure it's a software error or misconfiguration. I would be pleased if you can help me sort it out.

you could check the keyboard applet as well as the regional and language options, make sure everything is set properly.

@King If I was going to have it repaired, I wouldn't be enquiring it here, would I! The exactitude of the issue is not as severe as it may appear, it probably is a minor error and I am not willing to have it repaired under these conditions. I'd rather buy a new laptop instead paying for the cost repairs of the current one.

@BC Programmer never mind the language and regional options, but how do I configure the other settings you mentioned?

Okay guys. I found out that it is my "a" button that has become disfunctionate. I am now virtually copying the a button from any text that seems suitable enough and pasting it using CTRL+V which is at large painstaking. Whenever I restart my laptop, I want to have "a" button at hands. How can I make it available at every Windows startup session? On the clipboard??

              Thanks.

the keyboard applet is within control panel. you likely have extra tabs in there from a special program for your laptop that might be interfering with using the keyboard. As an example I had an old laptop with a "macro" feature, but I accidentally set enter to some other key. needless to say it made things difficult until I realized what I did.

              here's something to try.

              get Process explorer:

              http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

run it, and make sure it has the "command line" tab enabled.

File-Save As, and attach to your reply.

Also- can you boot to a CD, such as a Linux live CD or other bootable disc? if the keyboard works fine on that, then it's either a hardware issue or a BIOS issue (although I doubt CMOS setup has an option to toggle like "make my A key unusable"  ;D

regarding placing the letter A on your clipboard:

it would be pretty easy to write a little program to do this for you- but Let's explore your options first.

Well, just to mention it; my "a" button doesn't seem to work, it doesn't type in anything t all. But still to make sure I would like to try your recommendation.

I have the process explorer details attached.

well- I'm afraid nothing seems amiss to me in the file; sounds like a hardware issue with the keyboard.

O.k. BCProgrammer, thanks for all the help. Do you know from where I could purchase  small external keyboard for my laptop? It would be of great help!  :)

also i think i could do without the a and the tab buttons.

Actually, I thought of another thing that might be causing it.

Do you have any hotkeys configured for your shortcuts? I cannot think of a away to check this automatically- but you can view the properties of your shortcuts and check to see if you set "a" as a shortcut key for something- likely the programs that you cannot see.

                    nvm given

My Tab is also not working.

I am led to the same conclusion as my previous post. go ahead and check  your shortcuts- but I don't believe tab is a valid shortcut key.

Actually, I've never had to purchase a keyboard explicitly for a laptop, so sie has never been an issue. Anything from Logitech or Microsoft are usually high-quality- but opinions differ.

If your laptop is under warranty you can get the keyboard replaced.

As an aside I had a similar issue with my thinkpad, it wasn't allowing me to enter my BIOS password. (this is a OLD laptop, running DOS). It had a lot of issues in the last few weeks, since the battery leaked (no visible fluid but something is definitely amiss). all sorts of strange errors, like Divide overflow and other random stuff.

Suddenly though, the keyboard started working proper again...  :-\

You mean your cmos battery just leaked? If that's the case then there is a problem with the battery. Well Perl looks like your keyboard isn't gonna help you anymore well i hope it's on warranty but, you can also buy an external keyboard for the meantime since you are using it everyday.
