Ethernet cards override USB

I have an Athlon AMD XP 1800+ It has 2 onboard USB connections, 1 onboard Ethernet and 1 pci ethernet. My adsl is using 1 usb.
When ever i plug in something into either ethernet plug my usb connections stop working? i dont know what it could b. There r no conflicts when u look in device manager. USB ip/tcp is set to auto whilst the ethernet card has 192.168.0.1 for my xbox. It was working fine until a mate tried to network his pc to mine. he doesnt know what he has changed. Any help would b much apprieciated.

Have you tried running a Windows Update by going to http://www.microsoft.com ? Have about updating your drivers for the Enternet card?
