Is it possible to install a OS on a external Hard Drive?
    « on: May 11, 2009, 07:01:09 PM »
    OK,

I have just downloaded Windows Vista 7 CS. But, i don't want to erase XP or do a dual boot. (The dual boot of doom :P)

So, If you know the solution That would be great!

    Thanks,
    Miles M.

    Get another Hard Drive.
You are supposed to have a spare hard drive.

I'm not sure about Windows 7 but it can be done with XP

You cant realy use it on different computers for obvious reasons. Also it seems to run a bit slower on external drives. I used a pocket 60 Gig portable drive. I assume the lag comes from usb not being as fast as the cable but it worked great!!!

What I meant earlier was the you put the spare drive inside your PC and set the other aside. It is your backup. If you can use a screwdriver you can do it.

Ohh and its not as much effort as it looks. I did it easily. You do need some specific tools it lists. Its a complete walkthrough for Windows XP, not sure if this could be used in Windows 7
