Continious long beep, then computer shuts down
    « on: May 16, 2009, 02:05:41 AM »
    hi,
i have a computer here which i cleaned. my family member was complaining it makes a lot of noise. i noticed the pcu fan was so dusty, i cleaned it with the air spray.
when i was done, i started the computer and i get this continious long beep. i get to the post stage and sometimes i see the win xp loading (or safe mode), then the computer shuts down.
i took out the fan again, placed it back. still nothing.
i took out the RAM, placed it back and still nothing.
    any ideas?
i am using award bios on this computer.

    thanks

yeah that was the first place i went to, but i dont see that award bios has one long continious beep.
if i remove the RAM and start the computer i get endless repeating beeps. so not sure if the RAM here is the problem.
      what do u think?

Can you describe exactly what the beeping sounds like when you try to start the computer?

How did you clean the computer parts?

Have you tried putting one RAM stick in at a time, and in different slots?

so i read in a tech article to remove the battery, so i did that.
i restarted the computer without the batter for 20 sec., then shut it down.
i put back the battery in its place, as well as put the memory stick in a different slot, then restarted the computer.
now i don't hear any sound, but after a few seconds, the computer shuts down by itself anyhows.
not sure where the problem is.

another thing, i disconnected everything, except the power supply to the motherboard.
i get no beeps, and my computer is not shutting down.
            what can cause the problem

also i noticed its when i plug power to the ATX_12V is when i get the shut down situation.
            hope this helps.

It seems all your problems started after you cleaned your system.

Exactly what comes out of this dust cleaner spray? Do you know?

Also, when you were cleaning, was the computer unplugged?

i have on clue what comes out of this spray, except for air. i reads butan propan.
and yes, the computer was completely unplugged from the electric when i was cleaning it.

thing is, it worked fine just before the cleaning, except for the beeping.
so im not sure if to go out a PS, then find out its not the problem.

              Hmmmm....

The first thing I would try is removing all your hardware and cables, the reattaching them. (Reseating your hardware - to make sure everything is connected properly)

Uh-oh! Butane & propane dissolve plastic!

Possible permanent damage to the motherboard and everything on it.

i cleaned my own computer with it a couple of times and nothing seems to be wrong.
like i said, the computer boots, but shuts down after about 20 seconds.
so im not sure its the spray.
                  what u think.

I would venture to guess the psu is overheating check to see if the fan is moving inside and if not you need a new psu.
