Mouse and Keyboard won't work at Welcome screen
    « on: May 26, 2009, 12:59:44 PM »
I have a few hard drives that are all running on xp. When I hook them up (separately) to my computer they work fine with the exception of one. It will load but at the welcome screen the mouse and keyboard won't respond. Keyboard and mouse are good cause they work fine with the other hard drives. I have tried recovery console and ran fixboot and fixmbr with no changes but like I said it does load it's just the mouse and keyboard won't respond. I have done chkdsk and copied Ntldr and Ntdetect.com with no results. Is there something  that I am overlooking. What else can I try?

Are the keyboard and mouse USB?

When you state you have a few hard drives be specific...
Is there an OS installed on each of these drives ? ?
If not are the jumpers set properly on each drive ? ?
The drive with Windows should be jumpered master...all others if not having an OS should be slave drives.

Mouse and keyboard are not usb. When I connect the hard drives they are not connected at the same time. I had tried each one on my system to see if it was the mouse and keyboard or if it was something else. Yes they all have xp sp2 installed.

Was XP installed on all of them when they were connected to this specific machine ? ?
If not they will not boot properly and may be the cause of the issues...

However they can still be hooked up as slave drives to retrieve the data and format for use...

The drive that is giving me problems was not connected to this machine when installed. However it still gives me the same issue when I start it on the machine that was used for it's install. Sorry if I might sound confusing I am not that great at explaining things.

What exactly are your goals for this drive ? ?
I don't think you will succeed in getting it to boot on another machine.

However Windows does NOT need to run on it for you to retrieve the data if that is what you are after...

I want to be able to log on to Windows. I have two computers. Computer one has one hard drive which is the one that the mouse and keyboard won't do anything when it gets to the welcome screen. XP was installed on this drive with computer one. Computer two has two hard drives both work fine. Both drives had XP installed with computer two(second drive was added for more storage). I tried connecting drive one(from computer one) to computer two to see if the problem was with the drive or with the computer. When I connected drive one(by itself) to computer two it did the same thing and loads to the welcome screen with the mouse and keyboard not responding. I hope that makes a little more sense.

The reason your mouse and keyboard aren't working is because one computer used one set of keyboard and mouse and the other used another set.  Thus they each have different drivers installed your computer can read and run windows of your one hardrive but i doesn't have the drivers on that hdd for your mouse and keyboard.  You either need to put the native drive as master and the other drive as slave or you need to use a enclosure to allow your hardrive to act as an external harddrive.

Actually I am using the same mouse and keyboard from computer one. I have also tried others(usb and ps\2) but have come up with the same results. Computer one and computer two are practically identical the only difference is one processor is 2ghz and two is a 1ghz. Both processors are Pentium 4.

This is unlikely the issue as XP will load generic drivers for the keyboard and mouse...

jenn i'd suggest buying a PS2 keyboard and mouse and try it on both machines...everyone should have one. Even if they sit in the closet most of the time...
