My HP laptop freezes at startup.
    « on: July 07, 2009, 03:55:12 PM »
Every time I start up my HP Pavilion dv6000, it loads up to the desktop, and it looks fine, and the mouse moves, but I can't click on anything and everything's unresponsive. It immediately freezes before I have a chance to do anything about it.

And that's basically it. I can't do anything. And I don't remember downloading/installing anything yesterday, unless it was something automatic. I'm typing this on another computer, obviously. So any help would be much appreciated. Thanks :)

No, it doesn't freeze up in safe mode, but I don't know what to do in safe mode...

      Hi,

Please disable all start-up items in safe-mode. here is how.

In the Start Search field, type msconfig , and press Enter . The System Configuration window opens.

      OR

Press and hold Windows logo key on keyboard and press R. It will open Run Window. Type the following in the open box and click OK

      MSconfig

      The System Configuration window opens.

      Please click on Startup tab

Remove the check mark from all entries.

Then click on Apply, Close and Please click on Exit without restart.

When the system restarts, you will see a message about System Configuration Utility.  Click in the box for "Do not Show this message" and then click on OK.

Now check in normal mode whether issue persists. If not, you can conclude that one of the start up programs is causing this issue.

to find out which entry is causing this issue, enable 2 or 3 entry in mscofig and check. try the steps till you find the entry which is causing this issue.

      Refer HP document: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00821579&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en

Oh, no.... now it freezes up before it can even enter safe mode... It says "Loading Windows Files" at the top and it has a long list underneath, and after a while it just restarts...

        anybody?

If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.
If you have only one RAM stick installed...
        ...run memtest: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.html

        Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD, and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

Try the above said steps, if it is not working......  :'( you may consider reading my post  ;D

Then please follow the steps provided in the HP document provided below:

Windows XP: Using the PC Recovery Solution
        http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00608578&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&rule=27903&product=3259248

Please click on the link to open it.

If the notebook was shipped with Vista, then refer the document provided below

HP Notebook PCs - Using HP Backup and Recovery Manager
        http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/fastFaqLiteDocument?lc=en&cc=us&product=18703&dlc=en&docname=c00809678

Also try the start-up repair option if you are using Windows Vista.  Please note that if you can access the HP recovery manager using by pressing F11 key at start-up, you may launch System restore on your notebook and perform system restore (No need to access Windows.)

        cool :-)

          another problem...
          « Reply #7 on: July 09, 2009, 11:05:07 AM »
Alright well after trying everything I could do, I ended up just doing a system restore, so now I have my computer back and at least alive and responsive.

but several days before my HP laptop started freezing, it started making a strange noise, every once in a while, on the left side, upper left side of the keyboard. It's like a little motor or something and sometimes, for no real reason at all, it starts making noise, like a rolling "rrrrrrrrr", and it varies in loudness.
It never used to do that... what is it? Should I be concerned?

dude, it's a laptop. so that's made of basically two parts: 1. screen and 2. keyboard/mouse. so, i used the "upper left side of the keyboard" as a reference to the position where the noise is coming from. obviously it's coming from inside the computer. i just want to know what that is and if i should be concerned and do something about it...
