My son's limited user account isn't very limited
    « on: August 02, 2009, 10:46:17 AM »
Hello, I have Win XP Pro service pack 2.

I made my son a limited account because he likes to download and install things. Even with a limited account though he has been able to alter things. I have had to manually deny him access to programs and place a disk quota on him to limit his changes and now he's playing in my control panel!

Can anyone please tell me what to do on my admin account to restrict him from the control panel? google searching brings up 3rd party apps and manual registry tweaks.

    Thank you in advance!

Maybe he found out your password to administrator account.... Change it

Try setting restrictions manually again. See if it works...
If that doesn't work then I am not sure if you can do anything else.

My son is 6 yrs old and does not know how to use the keyboard beyond whats necessary to play flash games. He does not use the Run As command and I can not find a way to change access/deny privileges for control panel.

Also the restrictions that are there are specifically for his profile because I know deny takes precedence over allow.

You'd be suprised how much 6 year olds can learn...
I agree...change the Admin password first.

I am very knowledgeable about his skill level. And I tested to see if he knew the password by passwording his account and he is unable to access it at all. He's gotten very annoyed by that....hence he decided to play with my nvidia control settings and make things luminescent and generally mess with things.

I wouldn't have posted on the forum for assistance if I hadn't tried basic and simple things to do. I have changed passwords....even to the point of using a complicated chinese phrase so that he wouldn't have any experience in it. I do not write my passwords anywhere nor do others know my passwords. I wish it was as simple as a password change. I have it so that he can't download or install programs. He also can't access either drive from My Computer. Yet for some reason he is able to access control panel.

I know it may sound like a stupid question but did you use the shortcuts in "Administrative Rights" folder?

Does your son have his own user account or you have enabled "Guest" account?

I'd suggest him to use Guest account.

I would give him time on the pc by logging into his account of course. I only passworded it to restrict when he is on the pc

Not sure how you set it up but on a limited User account he shouldn't be able to do anything in the nVidia Control Panel...

              good- you have XP pro-

have you tried the group policy editor? (Start->Run gpedit.msc)

This (and his age - 6) makes me think he is ***too young*** to be allowed unsupervised access to a computer.

Indeed, when I was 6 I used to play in a sandbox.
