Temps WAY too high (Causing crashes)
« on: August 04, 2009, 06:31:45 PM »
Nvidia GeForce 9800GT; part of my new build. quite pleased with the cards performance.

Runs crysis great on high settings (40-50fps average)- with one caveat - it crashes after about 20-30 minutes or so- the graphics driver crashes and I'm forced to close crysis.

None of my other games crash- HL2 EP1 & 2, NFS HP2, and a few others- but they are not as graphics intensive.

The card idles pretty high, too- right now it's sitting at 69 degrees. I ran "Furmark" to do a burn test of the GPU and the temp rose exponentially to around 85 degrees, and then started moving up slower and slower. it was at 94 degrees when I decided to stop the test (this was after about 10 minutes)...

basically- how can I cool this card down? I know it runs hot normally- but when it starts interfering with usage it must be too hot :(
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

update: running furmark now, with the side case open and a good desk fan blowing on high right onto the video card.

10K frames so far, temp is 87 degrees.

Can you put in a pci slot fan to cool the card?....... Google is full of searches for similar issues with that card and overheating.

Never argue with a stupid person, they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

actually, that's a great idea :) I have one free PCI slot and I can't see myself needing it for anything, so I'll definitely explore that option thoroughly; Most seem to be fore reducing overall temps which is excellent since all my temps are a bit high.

I tried replacing the fan (which appears to be somewhat more devoted to form then function) with the fan from my Geforce 5500FX, but to no avail. I got it disconnected but the wires snaked through the metallic enclosure. I'd rather not remove that :P

For now I'll settle for every single other game I have which runs perfectly fine- crysis is just especially taxing on the GPU So it'll take a little extra care :)

Option 1: Manually crank the fan to 100% for these applications
Option 2: Reseat the cooler with quality aftermarket TIM (non-conductive, avoid AS5 for this)
      Option 3: Rig additional cooling
Option 4: Opt for an aftermarket cooler (a Duorb silently dropped my 8800GT load temps to below the stock cooler idle temps)
