    Computer freezes randomly
    « on: August 26, 2009, 08:05:39 PM »
    Hi everyone,

In the last few weeks, my computer began locking up when I would start using Steam to play a video game. Unfortunately, the Steam Support community were unable to help me find a solution. More recently, the computer has began to freeze when using other applications (i.e., it seems to be random). After cleaning all the dust (or at least as much as I could) out of the computer, I ran memtest86. Three out of the 4 memory sticks failed the test. After ordering some more RAM and replacing all of the old memory sticks with 2 new ones (1 GB each), the computer is still locking up on me at seemingly random intervals. I've run the diagnostics for the graphics card and Dell Diagnostics for the computer for the "computer freezes" symptoms. The computer passed both diagnostics tests. My McAfee antivirus scan did not show any viruses. Spybot S&D found MyWay.MyWebSearch (FunWebProducts). I was able to remove the browser helper object, but Spybot could not remove it from the registry. I think it said something to the effect of: it could not be relinquished by memory to be removed. SuperAntiSpyware and Mbam did not find any infections (the clean logs are listed below as well as the HJT log). Could someone help me resolve this issue?

    Thanks

Try starting your comp in safe mode and run SpyBot again to see if it can remove MyWay.MyWebSearch (FunWebProducts)

    You can't fix Stupid!!!

Here is the log analysis for the HJT scan....follow the directions for cleaning.

Spybot S&D is still showing the FunWebProducts thing after following the cleaning directions. I got the same response from Spybot S&D when I ran it in safe mode--no success in removing it. One of the many tests that the Dell Diagnostics runs is a memory test, which it passed. I ran the diagnostics after I replaced the RAM. In addition, my computer is still locking up. Any suggestions?

Forget about spybot. Run Malwarebytes (as suggested above) and/or Super Antispyware instead.

I haven't run Malwarebutes or Super Antispyware yet. I'll run a full scan of Malwarebytes and post it when it's done.

Good point. I will run it overnight tonight. I ran the memory test associated with the preloaded Dell Diagnostics. However, I suspect that the memory test associated with it may not be as thorough as memtest86.

Since Malwarebytes didn't show any infections, the bad motherboard socket seems like a logical cause for the computer freeze. If that is the case, is the only way to fix it be to get a new motherboard or a new computer?

I would swap in a known good power supply first, and if it solves the problem great....... Then if you do need a new MB you'll have a new PSU anyways, which is always a good idea to replace at the same time as a new MB..

Thanks for the info. I have a really old Dell (Dimension 4600). I'm not sure if it would be in my best interest to just replace the mb and psu since it is ~7 years old. I would hate to try to save some money now only to spend much more later on.

I ran memtest86 for 5 hours. It did 5 passes and reported no errors. So, does this mean that the mb is not the issue? The only other thing I can think to do is to a clean installation of windows. I've been trying to avoid having to do this since it is so time-consuming, but if it is the only solution then I guess I'll have to do it. Any suggestions as to what the next step should be?

By the way, I really appreciate the input and advice.
